NIH: Transplantation Branch Welcomes Twins
Transplantation Branch Welcomes Twins
8-22-00
Dr. David Harlan, head of the NIDDK/Navy Transplantation and Autoimmunity Branch, welcomes two sets of identical twins on a visit to the organ/tissue transplant research unit in the Clinical Center. Mollie Singer (second from L), who has type 1 diabetes, is joined by her mother Jackie Singer (l), 11-year-old twin sister Jackie, and aunt, Mollie Miller. Harlan’s group, together with the department of transfusion medicine’s cell processing unit, is planning a small clinical trial in islet transplantation for adults with type 1 diabetes. If the results are promising, researchers hope to design future trials to include children.
